Authorities confirm a pit bull attacked a 6-year-old boy near Mobile Monday night. The child has had multiple surgeries since and is still in critical condition at Children's of Alabama.
Mobile Count Sheriff's Office spokesman Lori Myles said the family was at a home on Mars Court in the Wilmer community that evening. There were several kids playing outside while the dog was chained up in a yard.
Myles said at some point the dog charged at the boy and pulled itself off the chain.
The dog latched onto the child's throat, she said.
The boy was flown to the Birmingham children's hospital where he remains in critical condition.
The pit bull is now being quarantined by Animal Control. It will be turned over to sheriff's investigators later.
No arrests have been made at this time. Myles said they will consult with the victim's family before deciding what to do.
