The couple was identified as Mary Ann and Wesley Landers. Authorities said they were at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center for their approximately 7-month-old daughter's trachea surgery.
Cincinnati police Lt. Stephen Saunders said hospital staff found the couple in their daughter's room at about 11 a.m. Police responded and found Mary Ann, 31, was deceased.
Saunders said it appears she overdosed on drugs based on preliminary findings. Authorities cannot yet confirm what type of drugs, but believe it was heroin.
The Hamilton County Coroner's Office reports she is scheduled for an autopsy on Friday.
Wesley Landers, 32, was found unconscious and locked in the bathroom. He had a syringe in his arm that police believe contained heroin.
He was revived, treated then arrested.
Saunders said he is charged with possession of drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia and carrying a concealed weapon. He was booked into the county jail after being released from treatment.
Mary Ann had a gun too, police say.
The investigation is still ongoing.
It is not yet clear who currently has custody of the baby.
