Several agencies, including dive teams, were on the scene at Killen in Lauderdale County where a vehicle went into the water near a boat ramp.
Chief Bryan Hammond of Killen police said authorities received a 911 call at 12:26 p.m. at the Lock 6 public boat ramp, off U.S. 72.
Hammond said a witness described the vehicle as running off the boat ramp into the river. The cause is still under investigation.
"We're still trying to determine whether it was an accident or another cause," he said.
It took about 15 to 20 minutes for divers to recover a woman from inside a red Ford Escape. The woman was transported to Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence. The vehicle was pulled from the water about 2:50 p.m.
Dive teams from Killen police and Florence police assisted in the operation, along with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office and several other entities.
