Mississippi Gov. seeks legislation to protect gun rights

Gov. Phil Bryant has asked Rep. Andy Gipson, R-Braxton, to file legislation that would protect Mississippians’ Second Amendment rights against unconstitutional federal overreach. The bill would prohibit state enforcement of any future federal act relating to personal firearms, firearm accessories or ammunition. Similar measures have already passed in eight states. Gipson is in the process of drafting the legislation and will file it immediately upon completion. “From Day 1, the Obama Administration has gone out of its way to try to eliminate the constitutional rights granted by the Second Amendment,” Gov. Bryant said. “The President’s latest attempt to bypass Congress to further his anti-gun agenda is particularly outrageous. I will do everything in my power to safeguard law-abiding citizens’ right to keep and bear arms, and I appreciate Rep. Gipson advancing legislation to do just that.” “In light of the recent federal administrative action, it is clear that the Obama Administration is intent on weakening our gun rights,” Rep. Gipson said. “This legislation will ensure that Mississippians’ right to bear arms will not be infringed.”
