Senate panel to to hear election challenge in Dearing - Sojouner race
JACKSON, Miss. (AP)
Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves is naming a five-member committee to hear Republican Melanie Sojourner's challenge to Democrat Bob Dearing's victory in state Senate District 37, which covers all of Franklin County and parts of Adams, Amite and Pike counties.
The panel, named Tuesday, will be led by Senate President Pro Tem Terry Burton, R-Newton. Other senators will be Rita Potts Parks, R-Corinth; Hillman Frazier, D-Jackson; Sally Doty, R-Brookhaven and Joey Fillingane, R-Sumrall.
The resolution creating the committee calls for it to recommend an outcome by Jan. 18. Options include seating Dearing, seating Sojourner or ordering a new election.
Burton says that he expects the committee to meet for the first time on Thursday. Burton says both sides are deposing witnesses, and said that court-like proceedings could stretch over long days.

The trial for our election case will begin at 8:00am Jan. 13th in the old Supreme Court Chamber of the Capitol. It is open to the public.
It is to conclude and go before the full Senate for a vote on Friday.
Thank you, to all who have supported us through this process. It was never my wish to put the state, nor the families of Dearing, myself or any of our supporters through this. It has however, always been my desire to fight to bring integrity to the voting process in our state.
It is my prayerful hope that the Senate Committee will hear the facts, review the evidence, and make certain the winner of the election is the candidate who received the most legally acquired votes.
Mississippians deserve to know that our election laws are upheld and that the integrity of our vote is intact. That is all we are seeking.
