AFTER TITLE AT AUBURN, CAM NEWTON & CAROLINA HEAD TO SUPER BOWL

Jan. 24, 2016

By Charles Goldberg AuburnTigers.com Cam Newton now has a chance to win pro football's biggest prize, you know, just like how he helped Auburn win college football's biggest prize in 2010. Newton threw two touchdown passes and scored twice on runs to lead Carolina past Arizona 49-15 on Sunday in the NFC Championship Game to send the Panthers to Super Bowl 50 against Denver in Santa Clara, Calif., on Feb. 7. The Carolina fans chanted "MVP! MVP!" as Newton spoke during post-game ceremonies. "We're not done yet," Newton said. Newton will be the fourth player to win a Heisman, be drafted No. 1 and play in a Super Bowl, joining Billy Cannon, Jim Plunkett and George Rogers, according to ESPN. Auburn went 14-0 in Newton's championship season. Carolina is 17-1. Newton won't go alone with an Auburn connection. Running back Cameron Artis-Payne is on the roster, center Reese Dismukes is on the practice squad and offensive lineman Tyronne Green is on injured reserve. Newton did it all Sunday, hitting 19 of 28 passes for 335 yards. He rushed 10 times for 27 yards, soaring over the top for one rushing touchdown from the 1, running and soaring into the end zone for another score. Newton was hot in Auburn's 22-19 win over Oregon in the BCS title game in 2010, too. He hit 20-of-34 passes for 265 yards and a touchdowns, and rushed 22 times for 64 yards in that game. Oh, yeah. He won the Heisman Trophy that year. "It's been a blessing for me to be a part of something so great," Newton said weeks after that game. "Any time you win games it's a big deal, but for this school to win a BCS national championship, what a way to make people happy. Auburn is a special place that I can call home." He returned to Auburn to get his college degree last year. Denver won its way into the Super Bowl on Sunday by beating New England 20-18 in the AFC title game.
