PASS CHRISTIAN, Miss. (AP)

A 2-year-old female dolphin has been released back into the Mississippi Sound after it was found stranded three weeks ago in Pass Christian.

Local media outlets report that federal, state and local agencies recued the animal Tuesday and released it into safer waters.

Moby Solangi, president of Institute for Marine Mammal Studies, says the dolphin was found outside of its normal habitat in a canal near Henderson Point.

Solangi says workers determined the dolphin couldn't leave the canal on its own. Solangi says cold water temperatures and low salinity would have harmed its health.

Before releasing the animal, officials gave it a satellite tag to track its movement and monitor its survival.
