2 Alabama Marines among dozen missing after helicopters crash off Hawaii coast
HONOLULU, HI (WSFA) -
At least two Alabama residents are among the dozen Marines missing after two military helicopters collided off the coast of Hawaii Thursday. The U.S. Department of Defense has yet to officially release any names, but families of seven of the missing have released their identities to media outlets.
Sgt. Josh Turner, 25, of Covington County, was identified by a family member in reports from KHNL-TV (HawaiiNewsNow), Raycom Media's Honolulu NBC affiliate. Turner is said to have enlisted right out of high school to better himself and to serve his country.
When reached by phone, a family member who identified himself only as an uncle, told WSFA 12 News the family is requesting privacy at this time. He then hung up.
The Florala Fire and Rescue Department shared a photo of Turner on its Facebook page confirming he is from the city on Alabama's border with Florida, as well as his involvement in the helicopter crash.
A second Marine from north Alabama, Capt. Steven Torbert of Florence, was confirmed among the missing by WAFF-TV, Raycom Media's Huntsville NBC affiliate.
