Woman gets probation after admitting to acting as attorney in 42 immigration cases
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Mississippi woman who admitted to acting as an immigration attorney, even though she wasn't licensed to practice law, was sentenced to three years' probation.
The Sun Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1nnaute) 34-year-old Marina Arendo Rojas Zayed of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, was sentenced Jan. 7 in federal court. Zayed faced up to five years in prison on a charge of making false statements to a U.S. agency by representing clients in 42 immigration cases in at least five different immigration courts.
She pleaded guilty in September.
Documents say Zayed fraudulently presented herself as a licensed attorney in immigration cases in several courts and in New Orleans from July 2012 until August 2013.
Prosecutors say Zayed identified herself in legal documents as licensed to practice law in Alabama and was using a false bar number.
