JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi legislative committee on Wednesday starts holding a public hearing over a disputed Senate election in four southwestern counties.

Republican former Sen. Melanie Sojourner is asking the Senate to overturn her 64-vote loss in the November general election to Democratic former Sen. Bob Dearing.

Both candidates are from Natchez, and they ran in District 37, which includes Adams, Amite, Franklin and Pike counties.

Sojourner questions the way the election was conducted in some precincts in Bude. Dearing says the election was handled fairly and his victory should be upheld.

Dearing served 32 years in the Senate before Sojourner unseated him in 2011. If senators agree Dearing won fairly, he would be one of the longest-serving members in the 52-member chamber.
