All suspected accomplices indicted in murder of Hattiesburg police officers

After two people involved in the Hattiesburg Police murders were indicted and appeared in court on Monday, the following six suspect’s indictments were filed Tuesday.
Curtis Banks, 26, was indicted for accessory of the fact of capital murder. The indictment details that Curtis did conceal and aid and assist Marvin Banks, knowing that he had committed the felony of capital murder, with the intent to enable said Marvin Banks to avoid arrest, trial and conviction. Curtis is said to have transported Marvin from the area of the crime and providing Marvin Banks with lodging at a motel in Hattiesburg.
Abram Wade Franklin, 29, was indicted for hindering prosecution in the first degree. According to the indictment, Franklin did conceal from law enforcement officers the fact that Curtis Banks was hiding in his attic, which hindered the discovery and apprehension and arrest of Curtis Banks.
Anquanette L. Alexander, 19, was indicted for conspiracy, and hindering prosecution in the first degree. The indictment details that Alexander did conspire with Douglas McPhail and others to commit hindering prosecution in the first degree. Other details include that Alexander and McPhail did conspire with one another to dispose and conceal physical evidence being the shirt of Marvin Banks that he was wearing when he committed capital murder. Count two of the indictment lists that Alexander did suppress by an act of concealment, physical evidence, the shirt of Marvin Banks that might aid in the discovery, apprehension or conviction of Marvin Banks.
Douglas McPhail, 21, was indicted for conspiracy, and hindering prosecution in the first degree. The indictment details that McPhail did conspire with Anquanette Alexander and others to commit hindering prosecution in the first degree. Other details include that McPhail and Alexander did conspire with one another to dispose and conceal physical evidence being the shirt of Marvin Banks that he was wearing when he committed capital murder. Count two of the indictment lists that Alexander did suppress by an act of concealment, physical evidence, the shirt of Marvin Banks that might aid in the discovery, apprehension or conviction of Marvin Banks.
Jimmy Velton Brady Jr., 22, was indicted for the sale of a stolen firearm. The indictment details that between Feb. 15, 2015 and March 31, 2015, he did knowingly and unlawfully sell or transfer to Marvin Banks, a stolen firearm, a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun, the property of Jimmy Brady Sr.
Cornelius Michael Clark, was indicted for hindering prosecution in the first degree. The indictment details that he did suppress, by an act of concealment physical evidence, to wit, he disposed of the shirt that Marvin Banks was wearing when the shooting occurred, that might aid in the discovery, apprehension or conviction of Marvin Banks.

Two suspects charged in the May 2015 shooting death of two Hattiesburg Police officers were served indictments and arraigned in court Monday afternoon. Joanie Calloway and Broderick Varnado Sr. appeared before Judge Bob Helfrich to be formally arraigned for their indictments in connection to the May 9th murder of Hattiesburg Police Officers Benjamin J. Deen, 34, and Liquori Tate, 25.

Joanie Calloway, 22, was indicted on a multi count indictment for attempted accessory after the fact of capital murder and hindering prosecution.
Calloway, who authorities say was the girlfriend of Marvin Banks, was driving the car when the shooting occurred. According to the indictment, Count 1 attempted accessory the fact of capital murder, Calloway did design and endeavor to commit the offense, she did intend to transport Marvin Banks from the crime scene in order for him to avoid discovery and apprehension, and did an overt act toward the commission thereof, to wit, yelled repeatedly for Marvin Banks to get into her vehicle; but she failed therein, in that Marvin Banks did not respond to her urging so she left the scene without him. The indictment continues, Count 2, hindering prosecution, did intend to hinder the apprehension of Marvin Banks, deceived law enforcement officers to the identity of the said Marvin Banks, knowing that Marvin Banks was wanted by said law enforcement officers for the felony charge of capital murder. Calloway pleaded not guilty to the charges, and her trial date was set for May 10, 2016. She is currently out on $35,000 bond. Broderick K. Varnado Sr., 25, was indicted on a multi count indictment for accessory after the fact to capital murder and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

According to the indictment, Count 1, Varnado did feloniously conceal, aid and assist Marvin Banks knowing said Marvin Banks had committed the felony of capital murder with the intent to enable said Marvin Banks to avoid arrest, trial, conviction or punishment after commission of such felony, by disposing of the murder weapon, being a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun. The indictment continues with Count 2, stating that Varnado on May 9, 2015, did feloniously poses a firearm, to-wit, a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun, at the time when he had previously been convicted of sexual battery on Aug. 4, 2014, in Forrest County. Varnado pleaded not guilty to the charges, and a trial date was set for May 12, 2016. He is currently out on $90,000 bond.
Marvin Banks, the suspect charged with two counts of capital murder was found dead in his jail cell at the Forrest County Jail on Dec. 11.
Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict said the autopsy revealed Banks died of severe heart disease, and no foul play was suspected.
