Etowah County investigators say a Southside High School teacher has been arrested for having sex with a student in 2013.
Sheriff Todd Entrekin said Andrea Elliott Means, 28, of Southside, was arrested and charged with one count of a school employee engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19 years old.
Investigators say Means had sex with a high school student in March 2013 while employed as a teacher. Authorities say the act did not occur on school grounds. Means resigned on Friday, with the Etowah County Board of Education accepting the resignation in an emergency meeting that day.
Etowah County Schools Superintendent Alan Cosby said the system is "fully cooperating with the Sheriff's Office and District Attorney's Office in this case."
Means was booked into the Etowah County Detention Center and released on $10,000 property bond.
"This type of ridiculous behavior is completely uncalled for by someone who was trusted by the community to teach our kids," Entrekin said. "Her job was to educate and encourage students to pursue their dreams and goals, not use them for personal pleasure."

Southaven, MS
A DeSoto Central High School choir director has been arrested and charged with two counts of sexual battery, according to Southaven Police.
Police Lt. Mark Little said Megan W. Morgan, 29, of Southaven, was arrested Friday and charged with sexual battery involving a minor.
Morgan was charged with two counts of sexual battery under the following statute, Mississippi Code 97-3-95, subsection 2. It should be pointed out that Morgan is innocent of the charges until proven guilty.
"A person is guilty of sexual battery if he or she engages in sexual penetration with a child under the age of 18 years if the person is in a position of trust or authority over the child, including without limitation the child's teacher, counselor, physician, psychiatrist, psychologist, minister, priest, physical therapist, chiropractor, legal guardian, parent, step-parent, aunt, uncle, Scout leader or coach."
Katherine Nelson, Director of Communications for the DeSoto County School District, said that Morgan is no longer employed by the School District.
"Megan Morgan is no longer an employee with DeSoto County Schools," Nelson said. "She was previously employed as a choir director."
Morgan, who was taken to the DeSoto County Jail and booked after her arrest, was placed under $25,000 bond on each count and has since bonded out of jail.
If convicted of the charges, Morgan faces up to 30 years in prison on each count.
