Walter Energy lays off over 300 more miners - brings total to over 600 at Company that filed bankrup
TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, AL (WBRC)
Over 300 more miners at Walter Energy have been laid off, the company confirmed.
Effective Tuesday, 319 miners will be temporarily laid off at Mine No. 4 due to market conditions, according to spokesman Bill Stanhouse.
This is the latest in several rounds of layoffs this year. Tuesday's layoffs bring the total to over 600.
The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July, the same month 200 miners were laid off.
Walter Energy had more than 10,000 creditors at the time, along with $1 billion in liabilities and assets.
Lawyers for the United Mine Workers of America appeared in bankruptcy court on Dec.15 to try to prevent the company from ending health benefits for retired miners and to prevent company executives from receiving bonuses.
Judge Tamara O. Mitchell rejected UMWA's collective bargaining agreement with the company Monday, Dec. 28, according to a release from the organization.
