Mississippi Democratic Party leader to step down - 'time for millennial generation'
JACKSON, Miss. (AP)
State Democratic Party Chairman Rickey Cole says he's stepping down in July and won't seek another term.
The Clarion-Ledger reports (http://on.thec-l.com/1NQ9c3H ) Cole previously served as chairman from 2001-2004, then as executive director - a paid staff position - for a year starting in 2011. In 2012, he was elected again as chairman and also served as executive director since then.
Cole, whose 49, says he believes it's time for the millennial generation to step up and take a leadership role.
Cole has led the party through trying times as the state's political structure has been dominated by Republicans.
The Democratic Party holds only one statewide office - attorney general - and Republicans control the Mississippi Legislature.
