WAYNESBORO, Miss. (AP) - An Alabama man says the killing of three Mississippians early Tuesday was a "big mistake" and occurred after a fight began while looking for a deer he'd struck.
William P. Miller, a 27-year-old Millry, Alabama, resident, made the statement Thursday to Wayne County Justice Court Judge Charles Chapman.
Miller told Chapman a fight escalated as he and two men looked for the deer after Miller consumed methamphetamine and a prescription pain killer.
Chapman set $4.6 million bail.
Wayne County sheriff's investigator Jamey Beard says deputies believe Miller shot and killed Lloyd Taylor and Jamie Gardner and then returned to Taylor's home where he killed 41-year-old Sonya Taylor. Beard says Miller sexually assaulted another woman who saw Sonya Taylor die.
Beard says Miller fled, surrendering after an 18-hour manhunt.
