Alabama's own Charles Barkley isn't a fan of Donald Trump, but he used one of The Donald's signature insults to describe the 2016 GOP front-runner's supporters Thursday night.
The Auburn basketball star and NBA Hall of Famer pointed out how Trump began his presidential campaign bashing some Hispanic immigrants as "murderers" and "rapists," and said the candidate's current rhetoric blasting Muslims and calling for a ban of Muslim travel to the U.S. plays well with "losers."
"To lump all Hispanics together, that was insulting. Now to lump all the Muslims together, that's even more insulting," Barkley said on TNT, where he serves as an NBA commentator. "To try and divide and conquer, which is what the Republicans always do, it's just sad. It's sad to watch every time he insults people, his poll numbers go up. He and Ben Carson, to be honest with you."
He said Trump is using divisive politics to gain supporters.
"You got these losers who love that, because they afraid to look in the mirror and say why they life suck, so they blame other people," Barkley said. "Your life sucks for a reason – because of you. Not because of Hispanics."
A lifelong Democrat who had considered running for governor of Alabama, Barkley said he decided to support a Republican in the presidential race. Barkley is backing Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who also has the endorsement of Gov. Robert Bentley.
But Barkley, who now lives in Arizona, lamented that Kasich, who is in seventh place in the polls, "has not been able to get any traction whatsoever."
