MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI)

An 11-year-old boy was interviewed and arrested Thursday after investigators say he made a terroristic threat that led to a lockdown at Dawes Intermediate School in Mobile.

The scare started early Thursday morning around 12:15 AM when officials started receiving reports of a fire at the school. Deputies arrived on the scene and there was no fire. Hours later, at 6:30 AM, 911 dispatchers received a text message stating men armed with guns were attempting to come on school grounds. The principal acted immediately, following their emergency safety protocol, and the school went on lockdown.

“It alarmed a lot parents, scared them,” said Sgt. Joe Mahoney with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, “their children are in there and it caused a whole lot of commotion this morning.”

The person behind the commotion, an 11-year-old boy, a former Dawes Intermediate students. Deputies say his actions cost them thousands of dollars, with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, the Mobile Fire Department, and the Mobile County School Board all responding to his false reports.

They spent Wednesday afternoon interviewing the student, before arresting him and taking him to Strickland Youth Center. He’s now being charged with one count of making terroristic threats and four counts of rendering a false alarm. Deputies state he may be connected to other cases in the city of Mobile.

“If this is someone who thought he was being cute or funny, it’s not, this is an example of what happens,” Mahoney said.

Since the suspect is underage, officials are not releasing his name. They do say the child withdrew from Dawes Intermediate three days ago, and he is currently being home schooled.
