A man who came home Sunday to find three dogs eating his chickens took a fence post to the dogs and started swinging.
In the process, he killed two of the dogs and injured the third seriously enough that it had to be euthanized at an emergency animal clinic.
A Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office deputy and an animal control officer responded to the home on Birmingham Drive around 10 a.m.
When they arrived, they were told by the chickens’ owner that he came home to find a pit bull mix in his yard with one of his chickens in its mouth.
When he confronted the dog, it attacked him, he told officers. He said after striking it several times, it ran away.
He had small puncture wounds on his arm, the report said.
The owner told officers that of his 16 chickens, only five were left.
The animal control officer attempted to contact the owner of the two dead dogs — a shepherd mix and a hound — but was told she was incapacitated and couldn’t talk to him. He left instructions for the two dead dogs to be buried.
The dog that bit the man will have to be tested for rabies.
SRCSO said the incident remains under investigation.
