Murder victim denied protective order in 2014; Ex-Husband will represent himself in Court
DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -
Nov 16, 2015
Newly obtained court documents show that the woman who was shot and killed by her husband Saturday afternoon had previously filed a protection order against her ex-husband, who is being charged with her murder.
Police say Roger Dale Stevens approached his ex-wife at The Corner Bakery and shot her several times. He then fled on foot. Kay Stevens was airlifted to an area hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, according to Decatur police.
Roger and Kay's divorce was finalized on Thursday. Court documents show that in October 2014, Kay Stevens filed for a protection order against her then-husband Roger, which was denied.
In those court documents, Kay says that Roger repeatedly harassed her, including showing up to her job and said, "I'll kill you." Documents also show that Roger had thrown black paint against her business and had also thrown fireworks at her apartment.
In the response for her request for a protection order, the courts denied her request for that protection order due to "insufficient for the Court to determine what the Defendant has done that would constitute an act of abuse."
Police arrested the man accused of shooting his ex-wife outside her business following a standoff Saturday afternoon.
Later that afternoon, multiple agencies were called to assist in a standoff near the Target Distribution Center off I-565 and Greenbrier Road. Around 20 officers, some wearing body armor, were involved in the standoff which resulted in Stevens' arrest.
Roger Stevens has been charged with murder. Bond has been set at $250,000.

The court saw Stevens to clarify his financial status. He acknowledged he had approximately $18,000 in IRA's and that his daughter is living in the Texas townhouse. The court asked Stevens if someone could help him cash out his IRA's since he is in jail and he responded that he would rather represent himself.
Stevens was advised that he could obtain a lawyer at any time or should his financial situation change, he may reapply for appointed counsel.
He is currently being held on $250,000 bond.
