Investigators say a mother and her unborn child were killed over the weekend after being shot in the 900 block of Rialto Drive in Montgomery.
A third person, identified other than as an adult male, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The shooting happened just before 11 a.m. on Saturday. Montgomery Police responded to the scene where they found 25-year-old Lakoya Brown, a Montgomery resident, suffering from a single gunshot wound.
Brown was taken to a Montgomery hospital where medical professionals determined her unborn child died as a result of the shooting.
A suspect, 25-year-old Marion resident Raymond Tavares Woods, was taken into custody after Alabama State Troopers found him on Interstate 85.
Woods was initially charged with one count of attempted murder in connection to Brown's injuries and one count of capital murder as a result of her baby's death. Following Brown's death on Sunday, investigators upgraded charges against the suspect to two counts of capital murder and one count of attempted murder for the third victim.
An initial investigation shows the shooting stemmed from a verbal altercation involving family members.
Woods is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Detention Facility.
