A young woman shopping with her mother at a Birmingham Walmart left the store with more than she bargained for on Friday.
Birmingham police and firefighters responded to the Walmart on Montclair Road about 12:30 p.m. A pregnant 25-year-old woman browsing the isles started to feel bad so she went to the restroom, said Birmingham police Sgt. James Cliett. Moments later, she delivered a premature boy.
Store workers and other shoppers helped with birth, Cliett said. "The medics got there fast,'' he said. Both the baby and the mother were taken to UAB Hospital, where they were doing well.
The Walmart on Montclair is the same store where, on Thursday, a 58-year-old woman was attacked and her purse stolen. That woman is recovering, and police are still searching for the robbers.
