series Alabamians traveling in France were busily trying to reassure friends and family back in the states that they were well after a series of terrorist attacks in and around Paris.
The French capital was gripped by a wave of shootings, bombings and hostage taking today which prompted officials to close the country's borders.
One of those traveling in France is Greg Shirley, a country singer from Moundville who is currently touring there and scheduled to perform in Le Mans Saturday.
This evening his wife Tonya sent a text message to friends reading:
"We are all safe. We were there (Paris) today but now in Le Mans two hours west of Paris. Greg's show was tonight and tomorrow tonight's show was great we leave back to Paris Sunday?? Not sure what we will do now. Please just pray."
Later, Greg Shirley posted on Facebook: "WE ARE IN LEMANS FRANCE AND SPENT A WONDERFUL EVENING AT A WELCOME PARTY FOR THE BAND! And we are safe and sound at our hotel! Will post from concert tomorrow!"
University of Alabama officials say six of its students are currently studying in France, according to Chris Bryant, a university spokesman. Officials say they have been in touch with all six and that they are safe.
Samford University also released a statement saying it has an unspecified number of students in Paris but that all are safe and accounted for.
A UAB spokesperson has said they are "unaware" of any students studying abroad in Paris.
"University officials are in contact with the students and their families, and will continue to monitor the situation," the statement concluded.
The U.S. State Dept. is currently looking to locate U.S. citizens in Paris. If you have information, the number to call is (202) 501-4444.
