Group wants Mississippi city to remove religious displays from public park

Collins, MS

Freedom From Religion has formally asked Collins, Mississippi to do away with religious displays in its city park.

The park displays a lit-up Jesus, a large cross being carried by Jesus, three more crosses, a small chapel replica and a large sign saying "I am the light of the world," with an image of Jesus.

The decorations were originally Christmas decorations, according to WDAM. They were installed 12 years ago but are only lit up for the holidays.

Freedom From Religion filed a formal complaint explaining that they believe the displays violate the establishment cause. "It is inappropriate for the city to display a religious message on a monument in a public park, because it conveys government support for religion," the complaint reads.

The city will meet Tuesday night to discuss the display.
